Here is a hidden cost in dental scanbody library

Bởi Alex Lee July 7th, 2026 2 lượt xem

A scanbody relies on library as its foundation, because intra-oral scanning is not just about capturing a 3D image of the teeth. It is about transforming the scan data into standardized information that is recognizable, computable, and ready for digital design. When using an intra-oral scanner to scan the patient’s oral environment, the output is essentially a set of 3D mesh data. It only captures geometry without any concept of tooth position or identity. It is like taking a blurry 3D photo—you can see the shape, but you cannot tell which tooth is which or what each part represents. The library functions like a dental “dictionary” for the system. It helps the software interpret the scanned data—identifying which tooth number each structure belongs to and recognizing areas such as occlusal contacts. Without library, the output from intra-oral scanning is nothing more than a “shape-only” file.

In the current dental implant market, there are many different brands of scan bodies, as well as copied versions of these products—commonly referred to as non-genuine scan bodies.A genuine scan body has a highly accurate, real-time library. If a non-genuine scan body is used, two situations may occur.First, the library data may need to be modified in order to match the interface.Second, some suppliers do not have an independent library and instead rely on illegally using another brand’s library. Once the original brand updates or iterates its system, the library linked to the purchased scan body may become outdated or inconsistent.

Choosing scan bodies from multiple brands can be a major pitfall. When different brands of scan bodies are used in the same surgery, inconsistencies in design standards may lead to inaccurate data, resulting in final restoration failure. Furthermore, different scan body brands require separate procurement of corresponding analogs, drivers, and accessories, resulting in higher costs and reduced inventory efficiency.

When using a single system of genuine scan bodies, an independently maintained real-time library enables seamless integration without modifications, minimizes data adjustment errors, eliminates concerns over interface mismatch and the need for rework, and greatly enhances the efficiency of the digital scanning workflow.

However, when examining the foundation of the digital workflow, the true determining factor is not an individual component, but the tightly integrated architecture of the library as a whole.

  • Tightly coupled data structure, where a change in one element impacts the entire system.

Scan bodies, analogs, abutments, crown as well as parameters such as interfaces, dimensions and angulations must all remain consistent with the physical components. If one parameter is modified, it requires simultaneous updates to coordinate height, angulation, screw channel position, angular calculations, catalog information, and data formats—essentially a full-chain data adjustment. Even a single mismatch can result in system recognition failure, design errors, machining errors, or clinical inoperability.

  • Deeply integrated software and database system.

The native library formats of systems such as EXOCAD, 3Shape, and Dental Wings are proprietary, encrypted, and non-editable. The library can only be viewed, with no editing access or modification tools available. It is tightly bound to the software version, license dongle, authorization system, and implant brands.

  • Extremely strict accuracy tolerance requirements

The interface, taper, diameter, and angular tolerance between implants, abutments, and scan bodies are controlled within ≤0.01 mm. Each manufacturer’s library is based on fixed standardized parameters. Any manual modification will inevitably generate errors, leading to data inaccuracy. This has a significant impact on synchronized design and manufacturing workflows, and cumulative errors may occur in the final restoration, ultimately resulting in restoration failure.

In simple terms, data integrity requires manufacturer-specific consistency constraints, with a unique linkage across the entire workflow: Scan Body ID → Analog ID → Abutment ID → Crown ID.If modified incorrectly, the data cannot be retrieved, resulting in software errors.

In the era of digital intra-oral scanning, library is a critical asset. Using non-genuine scan bodies or mixing multiple brands may appear to be a cost-saving and convenient choice, but it can lead to significantly higher long-term costs. Instead of paying for hidden costs in the later stages, it is better to invest from the beginning in a reliable system and dependable support.
